The Family Place has started the Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) program as a way of creating a sustainable system to follow up with past participants and support parents in their role as their child’s first teacher. Created by Avima D. Lombard, the HIPPY USA program is a 30 week home visit program for parents with children ages 3 to 5. The program follows an upbeat 30 week curriculum with weekly educational material and activities provided by home visitors to parents to teach their children. Started in May 2011, the TFP HIPPY program is the first one offered completely in Spanish in the District of Columbia. The HIPPY TFP team is made up of one coordinator and four home visitors, the latter all past participants and trusted community members. Each home visitor has an average of 10 families which she visits every week. During the hour long visit, the home visitor and the parent go over the weekly assignment. Then the parent will reenact the activities with their child throughout the week. The HIPPY program promotes the direct involvement of parents in the early education of their children.
