Participant Success Stories
- Carla has been a participant with TFP since 2005. She has been an active Family Literacy and Spanish Literacy student and her daughter, has been in our Early Childhood Education program. In 2007, Carla left her husband under terms of domestic violence and was on her own to find housing for her and her two children. In the fall of 2008, with the help of TFP staff, Carla applied for housing with HOGARES and was accepted and signed her lease on Oct. 3, 2008. While in the HOGARES program, Carla has been working, coming to her family literacy classes and providing for her two children. Among others, her goal is to establish permanent housing after her HOGARES commitment finishes.
- Maria started coming to The Family Place in the spring of 2008. The building where she was living burned to the ground and she was left homeless. After working closely with a community agency and their social worker, Maria started coming to classes at TFP and in March of 2008, she signed a lease for an apartment with HOGARES. Maria continues to come to TFP Family Literacy program with her daughter, and within the last month, she found more permanent housing here in the neighborhood of TFP.
3. Luz started coming to The Family Place in 2007. She and her daughter participate in our Family Literacy and Early Childhood Education Program. Luz is also a committed volunteer, helping take care of children during our weekly nutrition classes. Luz has been in the process of looking for housing solely for herself and her daughter in order to break the cycle of domestic abuse. Luz is presently in the application process, and is hoping to establish permanent housing through Jubilee Housing in August 2009. The Jubilee Housing staff makes all efforts to support potential new renters, including working closely with TFP staff to create a net of supportive services that will empower and sustain potential new residents, like Luz to live a more independent life.
