In April, The Family Place celebrated International Children’s Day by hosting an event on April 26th, which provided Latino American families and children to spend time together. Thanks to the JElena Group, staff, volunteers, and families we were able to enjoy the outdoors, engage families and children in activities and games, and provide educational entertainment by “The Science Guy”.

In November, The Family Place was chosen to receive donation from the Kid Rock Foundation as part of Kid Rock’s “Care” tour. Kid Rock performed at the Fillmore in Silver Spring on November 16th and a few TFP representatives were invited to attend a press conference before the concert. Haley Wiggins, our Executive Director, along with representatives from another local non-profit named So Kids Can, spoke briefly at the press conference.

On November 9th, The Family Place participated in Razoo’s Give to the Max Day, a 24hr fundraising event that raised over 2 million dollars for various local non-profit organizations. The Family Place is pleased to announce that we raised $8,147.00 with the help of our generous supporters. Thanks so much for commitment to our mission.

In honor of the Domestic Violence Awerness month, The Family Place’s support group Círculo de Mujeres Latinas en Acción, in collaboration with El Zol hosted a community forum to help people get informed and take a stand against domestic violence. People from the community were invited to join the group and wear white.

On September 28th Executive Director Haley Wiggins together with Mark Hugo Lopez, Associate Director of the Pew Hispanic Center were interviewed on CNN on the program USA Directo with Juan Carlos López. Mark Hugo Lopez recently published a report entitled Childhood Poverty Among Hispanics Sets Record, Leads Nation, which you can read here.
