DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SUPPORT GROUP – Circulo de Mujeres Latinas en Acción
The Family Place began the Domestic Violence Support Group in June 2009 with the help of Dr. Claudia Campos, a psychologist and educator in the Latino community who works at El Zol radio station.
The goal of the support group is to empower women to positively improve their lives and the lives of their families. The majority of participants have experienced an abusive family situation either currently or in the past. On average, 15 women participate each week in the Circulo de Mujeres Latinas en Acción Spanish-language workshop geared at garnering their self-confidence and knowledge of legal and psychological resources to improve their lives. With a goal to educate on prevention and recovery from domestic violence, women learn that they can change their lives to create a better future for themselves and their children. Dr. Campos covers a wide array of topics such as strengthening self-esteem, health, personal growth & self-realization, increasing emotional awareness, and learning their rights for living a life free of violence. The group meets every Tuesday from 12:30-2:00pm year round. TFP’s support group is the only Spanish language support group for survivors of domestic violence in the District.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Stay tuned for more information of upcoming events for this special month.
